Anthropic pretraining researcher Jacob Coxon publicly resigned this week, saying that after three years of pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic, neither company is acting responsibly and both are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.¹ He told the Wall Street Journal that Anthropic’s safety work is sincere but that competition makes trade-offs hard to avoid,² and two current Anthropic employees publicly confirmed some of his assertions, including alignment science lead Evan Hubinger, who wrote that he personally thinks the chance AI kills all humans is greater than 10 percent within the next decade.³
